Your knee hurts when you run or climb stairs, or it has hurt since an operation. Often the cause lies higher up or lower down: at the hip, the foot or in the tissue in between.
Why the cause is often not only in the knee
The knee sits between hip and foot and has to make up for whatever is not working there. If the hip does not rotate quite enough with each step, or the foot rolls differently, the load ends up at the knee. Muscles and joints are linked through fascia, so stiffness at the hip can show up as pain in the knee.
Common problems
Pain on the outside of the knee when running
Starts after a few kilometres and gets worse downhill. Rest helps until the next run ends the same way. The hip is often involved.
Pain at the front on stairs
Around the kneecap, especially going down, after sitting for a long time or when squatting. I look at the thigh, hip and foot.
After meniscus or ACL surgery
I can start early, even while the knee itself still needs protecting. I work on the hip, thigh and lower leg and follow your surgeon’s rehab plan.
See a doctor first if
- the knee swells quickly after a fall or a twist
- it locks and will not straighten
- it gives way when you walk
- it is hot and red, or you have a fever
- you cannot put weight on the leg
- after an operation, your calf is swollen, painful or warm, or the wound is red, weeping or getting more painful
How many sessions you need and when you can return to sport depend on the problem. After the first examination I will tell you what to expect. A session lasts 50 minutes.
Online booking is in German. The session itself can be in English.
